Crouse Hinds Type D

Here is one of my newer signals. I acquired it in January of 2018.  A Crouse Hinds Type D traffic signal. This one is from the area where I grew up. New Hartford, NY. This was at the corner of Oxford Rd and Sanger Ave in front of St. John’s Church. I remember this from my childhood and it was there from sometime before 1970. That’s when I moved there.

Here’s a couple pictures of it in the wild.

And here it is after I hung it in my basement

It has red and green LED’s in it currently and the yellow sections are what was up for many years. When I opened it up, I saw the signal was originally green. I do remember this being green when I was a kid. I’m not sure when exactly it was painted, but my memory puts it as somewhere in the early 1980’s. This signal was removed in 2015 for the village “modernization” of the village’s 2 traffic signals.

I was able to get the old lenses and reflectors for this and it is added to my project list of things to do.

A friend of mine tipped me off on this signal. He got another one from my childhood that was a twin to this one. It’s pretty neat to have something I passed under 100’s of times in my childhood and as an adult.

UPDATE: April 2018

Took one of my electronic controllers out of 2 of my outdoor signals and put it in this one. It took a bit of work to get it wired in. Thankfully all the LEDs were still wired to the harness and I just had to connect to the old terminal with the controller. After about an hour of my arms above my head, I got it all wired up!

Here’s a video of it with a controller I had programmed to mimic old time Utica, NY traffic signals running an electromechanical controller.
